Monica Mae Barden, age 74, of Waseca, passed away on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at LakeShore Rehabilitation Center in Waseca.
Born on May 5, 1952, in St. James, Monica was the daughter of Richard and Vernell (Black) Harbitz. She grew up on the family farm in rural St. James and attended St. James Public Schools, graduating with the Class of 1970. On April 1, 1978, Monica was united in marriage to Phillip Raymond Barden. Together they made their home in Waseca, where they raised their two children and shared 45 years of marriage until Phillip's passing on January 8, 2024.
Monica spent her career as a beautician at Golden Touch in Waseca, where she enjoyed serving her clients and building lasting friendships. She was known for her gentle spirit, warm sense of humor, and selfless nature. A devoted caregiver throughout her life, Monica lovingly cared for her children and later dedicated herself to caring for her husband during his illness. Her family was the center of her life, and she especially treasured time spent with her grandchildren. Monica enjoyed tending to her flower gardens, trying her luck while gambling, and, in later years, playing Mahjong with her close friends. She was a faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church in Waseca.
She is survived by her children, Derek Barden of North Mankato and Chelsey (Luke) Cassidy of Waseca; grandchildren, Shay Barden, Bree Barden, and Kenna Cassidy; siblings, Dianne (Tim) Pearson, Dale (Deb) Harbitz, Marcy (Mac) MacDonald, Jane (Rod) Wilkison, and Kevin (Jenny) Harbitz; brother-in-law, Greg Barden; sister-in-law, Rosemary (Ben) Ankrum; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Vernell Harbitz; her husband, Phillip Barden; brother, Wayne Harbitz; twin brothers in infancy; and her parents-in-law, Vince and Gladys (Gehring) Barden.
A private family graveside service will be held at Woodville Cemetery.
A Celebration of Monica's Life will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 9, 2026, at the Waseca VFW Post 1642.
