Michael Todd Goltz, age 62, of Janesville, passed away on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale following a motorcycle accident.
Michael was born on October 16, 1963, in Mankato, the son of Melvin and Peg (Dumbeck) Goltz. He was baptized as an infant and confirmed in his Lutheran faith during his youth at Trinity Lutheran Church in Janesville. He attended Trinity Lutheran School through eighth grade and graduated from Janesville High School with the Class of 1982.
Throughout his life, Mike worked in a variety of roles, including bartending in his early years, employment at Brown Printing, and as an over-the-road truck driver. He later worked at Guardian Energy in Janesville until his retirement in 2014 due to health reasons.
In 2012, Mike met the love of his life, Shelly Hoffman. Together they made their home in Janesville and shared many adventures-traveling, fishing, and enjoying motorcycle rides side by side. Mike was Shelly's calming force and a devoted companion. He was known for his positive outlook and ever-present smile. A true social butterfly, Mike loved visiting with anyone he met and sharing the many facts he had collected over the years.
He was passionate about the outdoors and dedicated to teaching youth gun safety classes. He especially looked forward to the annual "Taking a Kid Fishing" event. An avid hunter and fisherman, Mike found peace and connection with God in nature. He also enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his family and friends. He will be remembered as a kind and loyal partner, son, brother, and uncle-one whose warmth and generosity touched everyone he met.
As his final act of kindness, Mike gave the ultimate gift of life through organ donation, continuing his legacy of helping others even after his passing.
Mike is survived by his significant other of 14 years, Shelly Hoffman of Janesville; sisters, Mary (Kevin) Rathai and Dona Petzel; sister-in-law, Karen Goltz; stepfather, Jerry Schendel; stepbrothers, Jerry (Renea Robilliard) Schendel, Rich (Annette) Schendel, and Mike (Heidi) Schendel; nieces and nephews, Jessica (Phil) Olson, Kirstin (Tim) Burns, Melissa Loeffler, Alisha (Tim) Williams, Tyler Petzel, and Katelyn Petzel; mother-in-law, Sharyl Hoffman (Randy); brother-in-law, Tom (Trish) Hoffman; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Don Goltz; nephew, Zachary Petzel; great nephew, Allen Burns.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at the Janesville Chapel of Dennis-Steffel-Omtvedt Funeral and Cremation Service. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Janesville, with interment to follow at St. John Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Iosco Township, Waseca County, Minnesota.
In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Mike's family as they navigate this difficult time.
