Michael was born on October 10, 1947, in Austin, Minnesota, to Joseph and Vivian (Schmidt) Gentle. He graduated from Pacelli Catholic Schools in 1965 and attended Austin Junior College for one year before enlisting in the United States Air Force. He completed basic training in Texas, followed by technical school in Biloxi, Mississippi, before serving as a radar repairman in Great Falls, Montana. He was honorably discharged in August 1971.

During his more than 30 years with the company, he witnessed several changes in ownership before continuing with contract work until his retirement in 2016.
On July 18, 1987, Michael married Pamela Morris in Waterville, Minnesota. Together, they shared many years of marriage and family life.
In his spare time, Michael enjoyed wild turkey hunting, fishing, and camping. He also had a passion for astronomy and could often be found outside at night, gazing at the stars through his telescope.
