Mark William Bartelt

Mark "Mooker" William Bartelt, age 67, of Janesville, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, with his wife by his side.

Mark was born on January 23, 1959, in New Prague, the son of William and Jeanette (Prehn) Bartelt. He spent his early childhood in Belle Plaine before the family moved to Janesville when he was seven years old. He received his education in Janesville and graduated from Janesville High School with the Class of 1977. From a young age, Mark loved sports. During his high school years, he was a proud three‑sport athlete - football, basketball, and baseball. He was named All-Conference in Baseball and Football his senior year, as well as Batting Champion his senior year. While in school he worked for Janesville Utilities, and after graduation began a long career with Morton Buildings. He later served as a custodian for Waseca Public Schools and, most recently, for JWP Public School, retiring in 2025.

On July 9, 1983, Mark was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Peggy Born, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Janesville. Together they made their home in Janesville and raised three children. Mark and Peggy were inseparable - whether walking together, enjoying Friday night dinners, or attending Waterville Indians baseball games, they were happiest side by side.

Mark was an avid hunter and fisherman throughout his life. He especially cherished his annual trips to Leech Lake with his family. During the week, he could often be found in Janesville with friends playing cards, in Elysian enjoying conversation with friends, and on Saturday mornings he was a regular at breakfast with "the guys". Above all, Mark loved his family and took great joy in following his children and, most recently, his grandchildren through every season of their lives. He will be remembered as a genuine and kindhearted man - steadfast in caring for his children, mother, grandchildren, and wife - and for a warm sense of humor that made him easy to love and impossible to forget. Mark was a lifelong member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Janesville.

Mark is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Peggy; children: Matthew Bartelt (Miranda Weedman), Megan (Bradley) Yetzer, and Brett Bartelt; grandchildren: Parker, Tate, and Ella Yetzer; mother, Jeanette Bartelt; siblings: Jeff (Barb) Bartelt, Jon Bartelt, William Bartelt, Timothy (Kim) Bartelt, and Amy Bartelt- Fessel (Ryan Atherton); sisters-in-law, Nancy (Lane) Hartfiel, and Kristin Bartelt; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father; brother, Paul Bartelt; and father‑in‑law and mother‑in‑law, Lyle and Helen (Kiner) Born.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday, September 4, 2026, at the Janesville Chapel of Dennis‑Steffel‑Omtvedt Funeral Homes. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Janesville. Interment will follow at St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Ann's Catholic Church or JWP Public School.
