LESLIE “LES” WELLS, age 82, of Waseca passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2026 at Mayo Clinic Health Systems – St. Mary’s Campus in Rochester.
Les, sometimes known as “Whip,” was born on October 10, 1943 in Clinton, Missouri, to Leland Wilsie and Edna Marie (Henry) Wells. During his school years, Les was active in the Boy Scouts. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Army, proudly serving from 1964 to 1967 during the Vietnam War.
Les dedicated many years of service to his community. He was a charter member of the Waseca Police Reserves, serving from November 20, 1973 until January 31, 2004 — more than 31 years of commitment. He was also a longtime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for nearly 61 years and faithfully served as chaplain at the Waseca VFW for over 20 years.
Les volunteered in many roles throughout Waseca. He provided security at the Waseca County Fair for more than 20 years and worked evening front gate security at Kiesler’s Campground. For many years, he was also a familiar and friendly face as a school crossing guard, where he was beloved by students and families alike.
His faith was an important part of his life. Les was an active member of his church, where he served as a communion steward, usher, liturgist, and member of the leadership team. He was always willing to lend his voice as a scripture reader during special services such as Good Friday and Christmas Eve.
He is survived by his niece, Shannon (Troy) McNear; his nephew, Skyler Mallicoat; four grand-nephews; nine grand-nieces; nine great-grand-nephews; and five great-grand-nieces.
Les was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Rose Mary “Rorie” Murphy and Beulah Rodney; his grand-nephew, Duncan McNear; and his niece-in-law, Vanessa Mallicoat.
Memorial service for Les will be at 2:00 PM on Friday, March 13, 2026 at Faith United Methodist Church in Waseca. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Woodville Cemetery with military honors.
