Lamar Michael Kuster, age 84, of Waseca, died peacefully at his home with his family by his side on Thursday, October 1, 2026.
Born on November 11, 1941, in Wells, Minnesota, Lamar was the son of Leo and Leilah (Johnston) Kuster. He grew up in rural Wells and graduated from Wells High School with the Class of 1959. Shortly following graduation, Lamar enlisted in the United States Navy. He proudly and honorably served his country aboard four different aircraft carriers before receiving his honorable discharge in 1962. On November 24, 1962, Lamar was united in marriage to Helen Marie Krohnberg at St. Theodore Catholic Church in Albert Lea. Together, they shared more than 63 years of marriage, beginning their life together in Owatonna, Blooming Prairie, and Wells before settling in Waseca in 1970, where they raised their two children.
Throughout his working years, Lamar held a variety of positions. He worked at Charlie's Hardware in Waseca, several grocery stores, and drove truck for the Owatonna Bottle Company. He concluded his career driving fertilizer truck for Crystal Valley Cooperative, where he worked for nine years before his retirement. Lamar dedicated countless hours to serving both his country and his community. A proud member of the Waseca American Legion Post 228, he faithfully volunteered with the funeral honors squad. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and could be counted on whenever there was work to be done or assistance needed through the Legion. Known for his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor, Lamar always had a joke to share and brought laughter wherever he went. He was a compassionate and caring man who genuinely looked after those around him.
In his younger years, Lamar enjoyed bowling and later found great pleasure in fishing, especially his annual trips up north. He also enjoyed playing cards with his buddies, spending time with his "Old Fart" group from the Legion, and making the occasional trip to the casino. Above all, he cherished the time spent with his family and friends. Lamar was a longstanding member of St. John Lutheran Church in Waseca.
Lamar is survived by his loving wife, Helen Kuster of Waseca; daughter, Katherine Jensen of Lonsdale; son, Michael (Jolene) Kuster of Waseca; grandchildren, Andrew "A.J." (Sara) Ryan, Amanda (John) Braith, Abby (Thomas) Zimmer, Adam Jensen, Shelly Kuster (Dustin), Tony Kuster, and Jackie Kuster; great-grandchildren, Gavin and Kayly Ryan, Hayden (Zoey) and Annabelle Braith, Armondo II (Ava), Lilly and Stella Balderas, Meena Kuster, Jackson (Katrina), Gillette, Lexus and Keaton Sandborg; brother, Larry (Sue) Kuster; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
