James Hinderscheid, age 80, of Federal Dam, died on Thursday, June 18, 2026.
James was born to Anna (Cemenski) and Bernard “Ben” Hinderscheid on May 25, 1946. He grew up on the family farm in Heidelberg and went to school in Montgomery. He worked for Kimmet’s Mink Farm in St. Thomas, Meister Construction in Waterville, and Neiman Roofing in New Prague. He later moved to northern Minnesota where he continued working in construction and building homes. He spent time in Texas building a home for a friend.
He married Theresa Labs, they had two children together and later divorced. He married twice more, one ending in divorce, the second was to Barbara “Bobbie” Brown until her death. He later moved to Federal Dam where he spent the last 15 years of his life. There he was well known and served for a term as Mayor. The last few years he stared cutting and splitting wood to sell and mowing lawns in town. Earlier this year, his son Craig reached out to reestablish contact with him.
He is survived by his children: Craig (Aliesha Britton) Schlaak and his daughter and her family; siblings: Leo Hinderscheid, Theresa (Gordon) Ferch, Rita Miller, Bernadine (Robert) Mackey, Gordon (Dorothy) Hinderscheid, Alfred Hinderscheid, Rose Reinhart and William Hinderscheid; many nieces and nephews, and his friend of 10 years, Kathryn Lewandowski. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bobbie; infant siblings: Connie and Allen Hinderscheid; brother, Bernard “Benny” Hinderscheid; sister, Donna Carter.
