Hilda Irene Bergstrom

August 23, 1932 — June 3, 2026

Waseca

Hilda Bergstrom, age 93, of Waseca, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2026.

Hilda was born on August 23, 1932, to Emma (Dallman) and William Kanewischer in Lehr, North Dakota. She attended Lehr High School and would later move to Jamestown, ND.

After moving to Waseca, Hilda worked at Wolf & Habien Grocery before beginning a long career at Brown Printing, where she worked until retirement. She valued hard work and took pride in the relationships she built during her years there.

She married her beloved husband, Roger Bergstrom, on June 4, 1993.

Throughout her life, Hilda found joy in many things. Her competitive side could often be seen while bowling or during a spirited game of Scrabble, where she enjoyed both the challenge and companionship. She had a special love for flowers and gardening, taking pride in creating beauty around her home and enjoying the colorful blooms of each season. She loved bird watching, especially cardinals, whose bright red color always brought her happiness. Hilda was also an avid sports fan and faithfully cheered on the Minnesota Twins, Atlanta Braves and Minnesota Vikings through every season.

Hilda treasured simple moments spent with others. She enjoyed gathering with friends over coffee and donuts/rolls, sharing stories, laughter, and companionship that meant so much to her. Above all else, she cherished time spent with family and the memories created with those she loved.

Hilda is survived by her son, Ron Kanewischer, and daughter-in-law, Mary Kanewischer; stepdaughters Donna Rae (Bob) Gosh, and Sandy Brown; grandchildren Shane (Jean) Frisk, Trevor Kanewischer, and Aaron (Deanna) Kanewischer; and great-grandchildren Megan Kanewischer, Lexi Kanewischer, and Mia Kanewischer; as well as several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Bergstrom; her parents, Emma and William Kanewischer; her brother, Otto Kanewischer; sisters Elsie Kroetch, Martha Schweigert, and Hilma Schweigert; and other loved ones who welcomed her home.

A saying displayed in her room often brought her comfort and now brings comfort to those who loved her: “When a cardinal appears in your yard, it’s a visitor from heaven.”

A visitation for family and friends will be held at the State Street Chapel of the Dennis Steffel Omtvedt Funeral and Cremation Service in Waseca, MN on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM, with a prayer service beginning at 11:00 AM; Pastor Ashley Kuhlman will officiate.
