GARY MICHAEL “MIKE” McDONOUGH, age 83 of Owatonna, formerly of New Richland, went to be with his Lord and Savior on the afternoon of September 15, 2025.
Born on February 25, 1942, to Arthur and Roxanne “Bunny” (Gaughn) McDonough, Mike grew up in Waseca, and graduated from Waseca High School. On February 13, 1965, Mike married the love of his life, Sue. Together, they built a warm and welcoming home in New Richland, where they raised four children and shared a life full of love, laughter, and faith. Mike was a master electrician who served the New Richland community for over 40 years with skill, integrity, and dedication. He was an avid fisherman and cherished his many trips to Canada, where he found peace and joy in nature. He also loved playing cards, telling stories, and spending time with his family—especially his grandchildren, who brought him immense pride and happiness. He was proud of his Irish heritage and was known for his stubborn streak and the twinkle in his eye. He was often referred to as “The Legend” by those who knew him well.
Mike is survived by his children: Todd McDonough of Austin, TX; Brett (Leah) McDonough of Chattanooga, TN; and Jennifer (Mike) Vetsch of Owatonna, MN. He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: Steven, Jimmy, and Fawn McDonough; Corbin and Siri McDonough; and Anna, Abby, and Averi Vetsch. He is also survived by his siblings: Craig (Cheryl) McDonough of Waseca, MN and Peggy (Dave) Wecker of Carver, MN. Mike was preceded in death by his beloved wife Sue; his son Jason; granddaughter Zoe; his parents Arthur and Bunny McDonough; sister Maureen Proechel; and brothers Merle, Denny, and Steve McDonough.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2025 at Vista Lutheran Church in rural New Richland, with Rev. Dan Kordahl officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour before the service at the church. Interment will follow at Vista Swedish Lutheran Cemetery.
Mike’s legacy of love, service, and storytelling will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
