Gary Loren “Boog” Cummins was born on July 27, 1941, in Smith’s Mill, Minnesota, the third son of Stanley and Goldie (Hammett) Cummins. From a young age, Gary carried a great sense of humor, a kind heart, a steady work ethic, and a deep love for his family and community—qualities that shaped a lifetime of service.
In August 1959, Gary enlisted in the United States Army, serving proudly as a Specialist 4th Class and Personnel Specialist until October 1962. His assignments took him to Alaska, Missouri, and Wisconsin, where he formed lasting friendships and strengthened the sense of duty that guided him throughout his life.
On September 13, 1968, Gary married the love of his life, Connie Mueller. Their marriage was grounded in faith, devotion, and mutual respect. Together they built a home filled with warmth, humor, and strong family ties. They were blessed with two children, Jill and Mike, and later with the joy of three grandchildren—Aubree, Carsten, and Kennadee—whom Gary cherished with all his heart. Nothing brought him more pride or purpose than being a husband, father, and grandfather.
Gary began his 31-year career with the United States Postal Service in 1971, serving as a clerk, Postmaster, and Postmaster trainer before retiring in 2002. He was known for his integrity, reliability, and genuine care for the people he served.
Gary’s dedication to Janesville ran deep. He proudly served 20 years on the Janesville Fire Department, where he was Treasurer for 13 years and a CPR Instructor and First Responder. He also served nine years on the Janesville Park Board, including three as Chairman.
As a longtime member of the Janesville Jaycees, Gary gave countless hours to the community, including 10 years on the National Jaycee Board of Directors. He organized the local softball league for many years and managed the Jaycee #1 softball team—later known as Janesville Gold—which earned multiple state and national honors.
Gary’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. He was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served on the Audit Committee and as an Elder from 2008–2011. He lived out his beliefs through humble service, steady leadership, and the way he cared for others. His calm presence, thoughtful organization, and genuine warmth were an example of the strong and enduring faith that guided him every day.
One of Gary’s greatest joys was supporting Janesville athletics. For an incredible 60 years, he ran the game clock for basketball and volleyball and even helped with the clock for wrestling occasionally—becoming a beloved and familiar figure to generations of athletes and families. In 2018, he was honored with induction into the JWP Athletic Hall of Fame, a recognition that meant a great deal to him.
Gary is survived by his wife, Connie; daughter, Jill; son, Mike (Ann); grandchildren, Aubree, Carsten, and Kennadee; sister, Becky Fuller; brother, Ron (Cheeny) Cummins; sister-in-law, Audrey (Bill) Mueller; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Bill, Jim (Arlene), Dick, Bruce (Jenny); sister Judy (Holland) and brother-in-law Bill Mueller.
Gary leaves behind a legacy grounded in faith, family, humor, and service. He will be remembered for his steady presence, generous spirit, and the deep love he had for those around him. His impact will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
