Eugene “Gene” Edward Welch of Waseca passed away peacefully on April 10, 2026, with family by his side.
Eugene, the only child of Walter and Marguerite (Moon) Welch, was born on August 13, 1939, in Des Moines, Iowa. Gene graduated from high school in Des Moines in 1957. He began his college education at Simpson College, where he studied for two years before transferring to Iowa State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and another in electrical engineering. After completing college, he accepted a job at EF Johnson in Waseca, and he and Janet relocated there to start his career and build their family.
Throughout his career, he thrived as an electrical engineer, taking pride in his work. He spent 28 years at EF Johnson and later continued his career at Itron for 10 years before retiring. Using his expertise with Viking Amateur Radios, he played a role in helping establish the Waseca County Civil Defense, providing vital communication support during emergency situations. Gene took great pride in his work at EF Johnson, especially knowing that a Citizens Band radio he worked on is now displayed at the Smithsonian Institution. A true innovator, he also held a patent himself.
In their early years together, Gene and Janet embraced adventure as a young family, setting out on sightseeing trips, exploring new places, and treasuring the simple joy of being together. On Christmas Eve, he especially loved creating a sense of magic for his children, with Santa’s visit bringing wonder and excitement as they discovered the gifts left behind. He spent many years playing in a volleyball league alongside his colleagues. Gene fully embraced being a grandfather, taking great pride in each of his grandchildren and their accomplishments while offering steady support and encouragement along the way. He cherished time with them, whether it was lively games of ping pong or the joy of hosting an annual Easter egg hunt.
Gene will be lovingly remembered by his children, Lorri Welch and Larry (Beth) Welch; grandchildren, Rachel (Patrick) Doughty and Andrew (Maria Rute Costa) Welch; prior wife, Janet Welch; along with many cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and numerous extended family members.
A visitation to Celebrate Gene’s Life will be held on Saturday, May 16 from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM at the Third Street Chapel of the Dennis-Steffel-Omtvedt Funeral and Cremation Service in Waseca, MN. A burial will be held at a later date in Rock Rapids, IA.
