Debra Lynn Thompson

September 7, 1959 — April 12, 2026

Elysian, Minnesota

Debra Lynn Thompson, of Elysian, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2026, at Traditions of Waterville, wrapped in the love she so freely gave to others throughout her life.

Debra was born on September 7, 1959, in Albert Lea, Minnesota, the daughter of David and Irene (Olson) Neitzel. She grew up in Albert Lea, graduating from local schools before beginning a career marked by hard work, leadership, and genuine care for the people around her. Over the years, she held management roles at several companies and ultimately retired from Sam’s Club in Mankato—where many came to know her as the smiling, capable, and caring presence who made everyone feel welcome.

One New Year’s Eve, fate stepped in. Debra met Mark Thompson on a blind date that included an Alan Jackson concert—and from that night forward, there was no looking back. Exactly one year later, on New Year’s Eve 1996, they were married at Hosanna Church in Mankato. Their life together led them from Mankato to Andover, then to Wilson, Wisconsin, following career opportunities and building memories along the way. Eventually, their hearts called them home, and they settled in Elysian, where they built the life they loved.

Debra’s greatest joy was being with people. If you walked into a room she was in, you didn’t feel like a stranger for long. She had an especially deep love for her dogs—her faithful companions who were forever part of the family. Christmas was Debra’s favorite season, and she turned it into pure magic, decorating her home with multiple trees and an intricate holiday village that delighted everyone who visited. She also had a true green thumb, pouring her creativity and care into the beautiful gardens that surrounded their home.

An avid bowler, Debra combined her love of fun and organization by serving as a league secretary and proudly competing with her team at national tournaments. She treasured time spent with family, especially trout fishing trips to Lanesboro and the cherished annual camping trip to Cut Foot Sioux Lake in northern Minnesota—a beloved tradition spanning five generations.

Debra also embraced Mark’s love for baseball and softball, cheering faithfully from the stands. When Mark became a high school baseball coach, she was his unwavering supporter, always there on the sidelines. Together, they enjoyed watching the Waterville Indians, greeting familiar faces, and sharing the simple joy of the game.

With deep respect for those who served, Debra honored her father’s military legacy through her involvement with the American Legion Post 311 Auxiliary. She was a passionate advocate for veterans and never missed an opportunity to thank a service member or quietly pay it forward in their honor.

Above all else, Debra’s heart belonged to her grandchildren. Being “Grandma” was her proudest role. She delighted in every song sung, every gift given, every hug shared, and every moment spent together—no matter the distance. Her love for them knew no limits and will forever be one of her greatest legacies.

Debra will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Mark; her children, Doug (Kelli) Murray, Dan (Amber) Murray, Dennis Murray, Kelly (Vince Baker) Thompson, Nate Thompson, and Darcie (Travis) Brinson; and her cherished grandchildren, Ayden, Jadyn, Ali, Caleb, Elena, Lydia, Micah, Ava, Avarie, Colton, and Hailey. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Kari (Stephan) York, Jill (Brad) Zumbach, and Amy (Steve) Wild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her parents-in-law, Ray and Lois Thompson; her brother, Jerry Neitzel; and her beloved pups, Max, Shadow, and Eddy—who surely welcomed her home with wagging tails.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Waterville Chapel of Dennis-Steffel-Omtvedt Funeral and Cremation Service. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Debra will be laid to rest at Hamilton Cemetery in Racine, Minnesota, at a later date.

Debra’s life was a beautiful reminder that love, kindness, and joy—shared freely—can leave a lasting imprint on everyone lucky enough to have known her.
