Dorothy "Dottie" Cerven

Dorothy Cerven, age 93, of Madison Lake passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2022.

Mass of Catholic Burial will be 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at All Saints Catholic Church in Madison Lake with Fr. Robert Schneider as celebrant. Interment will be in Marysburg Cemetery in rural Madison Lake. A Rosary Service will begin at 9:30 AM followed by a visitation for one hour prior to the service at church on Wednesday.

Dorothy (Dottie) Lillie Cerven (Gavin), was born on September 30, 1929, in the Bronx, New York to James and Dorothy (Foulkes) Gavin. She graduated from Christopher Columbus High School in the Bronx and then worked for the New York Telephone Company as a phone operator until her retirement in 1959.

On May 24, 1958, Dorothy was united in marriage to James Cerven at St. Benedict Catholic Church in the Bronx and together they raised three children: James, Dorothy, and John. She was actively involved in the Parent Teacher Associations of IS192 and Herbert Lehman High School in the Bronx. Additionally, Dorothy was a Girl Scout leader and a Den mother for the Cub Scouts. She was very proud of her children and grandchildren.

Dorothy’s hobbies included oil painting and crocheting. She created many blankets and paintings for family members and friends. She also enjoyed reading many novels and mysteries. Dorothy, along with her husband James, were active members of the New York Telephone Pioneers of America charitable organization. Dorothy and James permanently moved to Madison Lake, Minnesota in 2005.

Dorothy is survived by her children: James (Dawn) of Phoenix, AZ, Dorothy (Gregory) Wolff of Madison Lake, and John (Tara) of Poughquag, NY; nine grandchildren: Samara, and Chris Cerven, Kaitlin, Mackenzie, and Andrew Wolff, and Sean, Meghan, James, and Kate Cerven; sister, Jamie Zeolla of Millbrook, NY and brother, James of Gilboa, NY.

Dorothy is preceded in death by James, her loving husband of 58 years, her parents and her sister Heather.
